Document 2

"The use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender...
"In being the first to use it, we . . . adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children."Admiral William E. Leahy, President Truman's Chief of Staff, in his memoirs "I Was There"

Why did Admiral Leahy feel the use of the atomic bomb on Japan was unnecessary?

Why did Admiral Leahy think the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was ethically wrong?

What branch of service was Leahy and why would that affect his opinion?

  1. he thought it was unethical because of the damage that it had done. which is in fact correct, it does seem a little unethical to some, and its no where near fair to the women and children. but look what they did to us. they say two wrongs dont make a right, but how much do we have to take? we all wish we had peace, but then we all want to rule the world. nobody will share the same exact opinion. so we have to do what we have to do. and show these other countries that we wont take attacks on the US

  2. Admiral felt that the use of the atomic bomb on Japan was unecessary because the United States had already defeated the the Japanese and he felt that they were already practically ready to surrender. He felt that there was no point in continuing to hurt them and take lives if they were already conquered. Metaphorically, Japan was the boy who was beat up and throw on the ground and the United States was the bully who was kicking the boy when he was down and already beat up.

Admiral Leahy though that the use of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was ethically wrong because he believed that in doing so, we were comparable to the barbarians in the Dark Ages who resorted to brutal methods. He believe that it was dirty and that women and children should not be killed just to win a war. The amount of civilians killed would not help win a war.

  3. The admiral thought the bombing was not necessary because women and children were killed who were not involved in the war. He thought that it was unethical because the damage the bomb had done was too much, especially when Japan was on the verge of surrendering. His branch of service was Navy.

  8. he felt it was unecessary because the japanese had already been pretty much defeated and all that we really did when we dropped the bombs was kill innocent women and children.
yes he thought it was ethicly wrong because we killed women and children insted of the soldiers we were fighting.
he was the chief of staff and the chief of staff usually agrees with whatever the president says but he actually thought the opposite.

  11. Leafy thought the bomb was unnecessary because Japan was ready to surrender. It was ethnically wrong because we bombed women and children. It affected him more because he was there.
