"I had then set up a committee of top men and had asked them to study with great care the implications the new weapons might have for us. It was their recommendation that the bomb be used against the enemy as soon as it could be done. They recommended further that it should be used without specific warning. I had realized, of course, that an atomic bomb explosion would inflict damage and casualties beyond imagination. On the other hand, the scientific advisors of the committee reported that no technical demonstration they might propose, such as over a deserted island, would be likely to bring the war to an end. It had to be used against an enemy target. The final decision of where and when to use the atomic bomb was up to me. Let there be no mistake about it. I regarded the bomb as a military weapon and never doubted it should be used."
President Harry S. Truman
Why did President Truman feel that the atomic bomb had to be used against enemy targets?
Was the atomic bomb strictly for military use?

President Truman felt that the atomic bomb had to be sued against enemy targets because without the bomb the war would last a lot longer. Also because if the war continued on land then over 1 million troops would die. Truman did not want to risk this. VUNW
ReplyDeletePRESIDENT TRUMAN FELT HE HAD TO USE THE ATOMIC BOMB AGAINST ENEMY TARGETS SO THAT WAR WOULDNT LAST THAT MUCH LONGER. Dropping the atomic bomb desimated cities and states. Plus it showed that we had the power to produce and drop acomic bombs.

because it was to much presure on him yes i think it was for the military use
ReplyDeletei think in a way the president thought it not only would show japan that we can defend ourselves. but in a way it was a backwards kind of reparation for the bad they did to us...

(SFJV):I think truman deosnt want to use the bomd because he doesn't want it 2 b we made a bomd now use it he wants to see how the war goes and if it does get worse then i think that truman would tell them drop the bomd so they could end the war once and for good.
ReplyDeleteI think that Truman knew how stubborn the Japanese were. he knew that the only way that the japanese would listen to us is if he used the greatest power he could. he knew the japanese would rather die than surrender so he needed to show them that we mean business and that we would kill all of them if they never surrendered.
ReplyDeletejkax you spelt "pressure" wrong. lol
ReplyDeleteWhen President Truman was given the choice to drop the bomb he said it was a "military weapon" doesn't that mean that the use of the Atomic Bomb was up to the military? And if it was up to the military would they use it or not?
ReplyDeleteSLAX
yes it was up to the military because he was the one who decided to make that decision and order the military to do as he says.
Deletepresident truman felt that he had to drop the bomb on enemy targets so that the war wouldent last as long as it could have. if he woldent have droped it then there would have been alot more people that would have died fighting.we also were showing that we have the power to do this again so it would force them to surrender.
ReplyDeleteTruman knew that innocent people would die, yet he let the bomb be dropped anyway. this was obviously not only for japan to surrender, it was also a product used to spike fear in other nations not to mess with the U.S.
ReplyDeleteTruman used it to kindof scare the Japanese, he wanted them show that they need to end the war with us now. he doesnt want the bombs to be used a normal thing, so he kindof wanted only military to have it because it was so deadly.

President Truman knew that the japanese would not surrenderif we did not dropped the bomb

i think president truman felt that the bomb had to be used because it was the only way to end the war. he felt that if it wasn't used the war would continue, and it was really the only way to get them to surrender
ReplyDeleteFalsely showed we had the power to produce atomic bombs. We were very wrong to drop the bombs if it was just for demenstrating superiority. And what about the civillians killed during the bombing, how do you justify that? Soilders chose or are chosen for war, civillians cant stand for them selves and we blew the livin crap out of them. Are we Stalin now? "One death is a trajedy, 1 million is a stitistic" !!!?
ReplyDeletei beleive that dropping the atomic bomb was good thing because the bomb caused the world to respect us. every time i here about the atomic bomb all i can say is "they started it!!" because what they did to us was disrespectful and unexpected, but the dumb thing is the we warned them and they just laughed and went about their buissiness. MY GOODNESS WE SENT THEM PANFLETTS!!! in the words of a friend of mine "i will not appologies for what my country had to do to become great."
ReplyDeleteWe could have used less powerful bombs. Ofcourse that probaly would have cost more too.
ReplyDeletePresident Truman felt that the atomic boomb had to be used against enemy targets because Turman wanted to show the Japanese that the US was not playing around about having them surrender. He said "the scientific advisors of the committee reported that no technical demonstration they might propose, such as over a deserted island, would be likely to bring the war to an end. It had to be used against an enemy target." I think that Truman made the right decision. Because, first off the Japanese bombed the US in pearl harbor WITHOUT warning. And, on top of that they waited until after to tell the US that they were at war. With the atomic bomb, yes it was wrong that it took away lives that did not deserve to be taken away. But, at the sametime Japan had it coming. And, like Truman said a technical demonstartion would NOT bring WWII to an end. And, sometimes in order to let the other person that you are serious about something you have to actually take action into doing it. It's kind of like a parent punishing their child. When they break the rules the parent HAS to take action by actual punishing them. And, Truman said, "The final decision of where and when to use the atomic bomb was up to me. Let there be no mistake about it." Even though it took two atomic bombs the Japanese ended up surrenedering in the end. So I think Truman was right as o using the bomb.

the bombing was a good choice at the time but come to think of it now, it was really dumb thing to do. it killed children an babys.

I'm fed up to the ears with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in. ~George McGovern
ReplyDeleteI think that the bomb was a good decision but i also think that the bomb should of been less efective. He cant say he didnt know that it was going to be a huge bomb because he said it himself.

ReplyDeletethe bomb did a good thing by ending the war, but was used against innocent civilians as well which was not cool. It was the firsst and should be the last time anything like that should ever be used.
ReplyDeletebecause he felt like he would be risking more lives of americans if he hadnt have used the bomb. also the president had a very hard decision and using the bomb is like choosing the better of two evils
ReplyDelete-lpjc
kjam one we can make the bomb towhat does stalin have to do with killing another countries people he killed his own and your second comment the way the atomic bomb was formed at the time and with the war going on at the time i doubt we could have come up with a less powerful bomb that would have helped end the war\
ReplyDeleteand the person who commented on kjax please don't take up unnecessary room with gramaticle comments when grammar is not a mian topic eslecial since the topic of the atomic bomb is more interesting then grammar to most

I think President Truman used Hiroshima and Nagasaki to test the new bomb. It killed two birds with one stone: won the war and showed what the bomb could do. (SQJA)
ReplyDeletetaxk what are you talking about is that comment even stated on this document and if not could u plezz stick to the assiment at hand he said your openion not something you got off of google
ReplyDeleteI think that president Trumans plan worked
ReplyDeleteKOAN-
ReplyDeletei feel as if he was pressured to do this. but it was the best thing to do. he proved much by doing this! and yes i do feel it was for military use they did actually agree on it!
Truman used it to scare the Japanese. he doesnt want the bombs to be used on a regular basis kind of thing.
ReplyDeletei think his plan worked and i think we used it for military reasons.
