According to Castro there were 162 missiles assembled in Cuba and he was ready to use them against the US. Why did The Soviet Union finally back down and remove the missiles?

The soviets may have been afraid of a nuclear war. If they bombed the U.S. then they would have been bombed in return. Millions or billions of people would have died. (SQJA)
ReplyDeleteI think the Soviets didnt want to see their people die and they didnt want the end of the world to come to an end.

I think that there were scared of a nuclear war, becuase if they would have fired missles then cuba and the soviet union would have been destroyed.
ReplyDeletethe soviets backed down and removed the missiles because they knew if it came down to nuclear war, then they were going to lose. soviets also knew that it would be society suicide. they knew that they would have destroyed 2 countries in the process, cuba and the ussr. also ussr wanted to say that they saved cuba from war, and ultimate destruction.
ReplyDeleteI think they realized the consequences of what would happen if they didnt remove the missles and so did the US

The soviets were afraid of the nuclear war and that is why they finally backed down and also they may have been afraid we would drop the bomb on them since they bombed us.

Cuba decided not to bomb the US because the US had bombs facing cuba in Turkey and threatened to bomb cuba. The two countries comprimised so niether would get hurt
ReplyDeleteAMME
the soviet union took theres out of cuba becuase they americans took theres out of turkey.
ReplyDeleteThe Soviet Union was really scared as we have a lot more people and the same type of weapons. The Soviet didnt know what they were getting into as the US was very strong once they found out about these weapons in CUBA! The US finally had scared them away. They probally sat down and thought about what they were getting into and it wouldnt of been good if they bombed us because the US would come back about 400 x stronger!
ReplyDeleteThe USSR fianlly look out there missiles from Cuba because the U.S told them that they would take out there missiles of out Turkey. If the USSR used there missiless then the us would have used there missiles to attack the USSR.
ReplyDeleteCYNW
I feel like they backed down because they didn't want anyone else to really have the same weapons and be able to kill them faster. We had a bomb in Turkey and they knew that- they were willing to back down if we did because they didn't want to get hurt.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the Soviets decided to back down because they realized how strong the US is. Even though they had Cuba ready to bomb us, we still had probably more bombs than the Soviets located in the US and in Turkey. The US would take a few hits, but in the end could probably do a lot more damage.
ReplyDeletei think that theyt backed down because they didnt want anyone to have the same weapons as then or rick life as we know it to be gone.

I believe that the Soviets backed down because of the actions of President Kenndy. When the United States agreed to take the missles out of Turkey, without the public finding out, was probobly the biggest motive for the Soviets to agree to remove their own missles. I would like to think that the Soviets did not want any trouble in the first place but to just have the missles their in case of a need to use it for their own pretetion because they might have felt threatened by the missles in Turkey. Then with the agreement to get rid of the US's then they must have found no reason to keep the missles there.

i think that the soviets backed down because they were probably afraid of neclear war, because who woulden't be afraid of that. they probably idnt want to see there people die and their country be destroyed. because they knew if they bombed us then we would bomb them back and that would be the start of the nuclear war.
ReplyDeletethe russians know how awesome america is so they would never try anything. the russians are all talk and no walk. they know just as much as we know how superior we are compared to them. they knew then and they know now that they will never be as awesome as us. USA

I think that the Soviets finally backed down because President Kennedy reached an agreement with the Soviets to remove them. In my opinion, I think that they acted in such a way because they would have a fear of nuclear war, and they knew that if they used the missiles that the U.S. would declare war on them and destroy them completely. Plus, the start of a nuclear war could lead to the destruction of a chunk of the world due to the destructive properties of nuclear missiles. One war could lead to another, making a chain of wars which could easily destroy anyone.

They backed down because the president finally stepped up and told them to give up on the nuclear weapons program. And they would of destroyed a majority of the planet of the Soviets started a nuclear war so be happy they didn't bomb us.
ReplyDeleteOne could think that Castro was bluffing; how can you trust the man who took over Cuba and made it a living hell? He can't be that honest of a man. The U.S.S.R. probably knew the truth that they did not have as many missiles as the U.S. believed. Theoretically it would be impossible for the Soviet Union to send that many missiles of that magnitude to Cuba in that little of a time frame. One could believe that the U.S.S.R. was planning on this from the beginning so that the U.S. would remove there missiles in Turkey.
ReplyDeletethere was a hundred missles in cuba blah blah i dont belive that but still they coulda been there so the ussr did back down because im pretty sure they realized that they were indeed no match for us and we also had missles pointed so hey either way we would have won
ReplyDeleteSNMU
I think that they were afraid that if the hadstruck, they would have made more enemies and then have more people trying to attack them than before. Also when the president decided that he wanted to back down from the project they realized that we were making the best decision for the well being of others and so that we wouldnt cause a nuclear war. If the soviet wanted to attak just a certain area it wouldnt be possible because of the readiation that would have gone off with the bomb. it would spread to many other areas around the attacked city killing more than the wanted.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the Cubans removed the missles for various reasons. Such as being afraid that them themselves will recieve karma in the US defense. Plus as stated (http://www.loc.go/archives/colc.htmlv/exhibits)
ReplyDeleteKhrushchev and Kennedy exchanged letters of exchange throughout the months discussing peaceful conclusions. The plan was that if Kennedy removed the missles in Turkey than Khrushchev would remove the missles in Cuba.
The Soviets thought at the end of the day it will be better to back down and end this dispute rather than cause more dispute with the missle.

i feel the ussr backed down because they knew it would have been a diesaster! and were thinking what was best in long run it would of opened a bad can of worms and caused much more issues then needed. at the same time i feel there wasnt as many missels as they claimed there was so they decided it wouldnt be worth it.
ReplyDeleteKOAN
I am not possitive that we did not really know how many missiles were on the island of Cuba; I just have lack of evidencce supporting that we did know how many were on that Island.
ReplyDeleteI agree with sadl. He has a very good point about the Cubans being terrified of causing something FAR worse than what they started. He also has a valid point about the Soviets knowing that it would be better to end the dispute rather than continue, causing potential problems. They knew that if they disarmed their bombs, and the U.S. disarmed theirs, then the dispute would be over MUCH more easily than causing a potential war by launching the bombs.

I believe the soviet union finally backed down for three reasons. The first reason was that the soviet union knew that Castro could start the end of the world with the use of the nuclear missiles. The second is that the soviet leaders knew that President Kennedy was ready and willing to launch nuclear missiles against the soviet union and cuba with full retaliation if Castro launched at The United States. The third reason is that the soviet union wanted to preserve some sort of peace with the united states in hopes of preventing a future nuclear war. Although the soviet union wanted power over the united states in the arms race, they knew the consequences of starting a nuclear war, and I don't think they were ready for those consequences. I hope the world is never ready for them.
ReplyDeleteCliff Jackson
In my words the reason for the soviet union backing down was because the US had missiles in turkey ready to destroy them if Cuba had attacked. Not only they would destroy the Soviet union, but Cuba also. If Cuba had shot the missiles it would have began another World War.
ReplyDelete-MBJA
Again with Cliff blowing everybody out of the water with his little mini speech!! gosh cliff!!
ReplyDeletei completely agree with cliff here because the soviets did know that Castro could end the world with those missiles. i don't think that they wanted to be part of the reason as to why the world was destroyed. and kennedy was completely ready and willing to launch the missiles he had targeted at the USSR. the soviets didnt want to be destroyed just like the US didnt. and last but not least the soviet's really wanted to prevent a future world war and to do so they would need to keep some sort of peace with the US. nobody was really ready for a full out nuclear war between two super powers. nobody was ready nor will anybody ever be ready for what effects a nuclear war could bring. let's just hope it never happens
The Soviets backed down because they realized that the US would only retaliate instead of backing down. The US was ready to attack them if the Soviets did decide to drop the bombs. The US would have ended up being more of a nuisance to the Soviets.
ReplyDeleteMJWM
I think they backed down because they got scared. I also think that maybe the atomic bomb use had a little bit to do with it. Because, by then everyone knows that the US will fight and not back down.
ReplyDeletethe likely reason the soviet backed down was that with the american blockade they really couldn't reach the missles so why keep them their so that they just create hostility
ReplyDeleteI believe the soviet union backed down for a couple of reasons. The first reason was that the soviet union knew that they could start nuclear war with the use of the nuclear missiles. And that they knew that Kennedy was willing to launch nuclear missiles against the soviet union and cuba with full retaliation.
